Taib Šarić

1934 — 2019 · lived 85 years

Taib Šarić was one of the most influential Bosnian and Herzegovinian scientists in the fields of agroecology, herbology, and agronomy. Over a career spanning more than five decades, he not only advanced scientific understanding of plant–environment interactions but also laid the institutional and intellectual foundations for modern agricultural science in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the wider region.

Early Life and Education

Taib Šarić was born on 1 January 1934 in Čapljina, in what was then the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He completed his early education across several Bosnian towns—Čapljina, Mostar, and Derventa—reflecting a formative period marked by mobility and exposure to different regional environments.

He pursued higher education at the University of Sarajevo, where he completed his undergraduate studies, master’s degree, and PhD in agronomy. His academic promise was evident early, leading him to international specialization and research training in some of the world’s leading agricultural institutions.

Šarić undertook postgraduate and postdoctoral studies in the United States (at Kansas State University and Bucknell University) and in the Netherlands (Wageningen Agricultural University). He also completed research stays and training programs in Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Switzerland, and India, where he worked at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi.

Academic Career and Institutional Impact

Šarić spent the majority of his professional life at the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences, University of Sarajevo, where he rose through the academic ranks to become professor emeritus.

His teaching and mentorship shaped generations of agronomists—he contributed to the education of 44 generations of students, leaving a profound imprint on agricultural education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

One of his most important institutional contributions came in 1977, when he founded a postgraduate program in herbology—the first of its kind in Europe. This program attracted international lecturers and positioned Sarajevo as a regional hub for advanced agricultural science.

Scientific Contributions

Taib Šarić is widely regarded as the founder of herbology as a scientific discipline in Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of its pioneers in the former Yugoslavia.

His research focused on:

  • Agroecology – understanding ecological processes in agricultural systems
  • Herbology (weed science) – the study and control of weeds
  • Allelopathy – biochemical interactions between plants, particularly how certain species inhibit or stimulate others

He was among the early European scientists to systematically explore allelopathy, leading a major Yugoslav–American research project that investigated interactions between crops and weeds over several years.

Šarić’s scientific output was extensive:

  • Over 100 scientific papers
  • Around 600 professional and technical articles
  • 24 books (expanded to 45 editions), including university textbooks and practical manuals

These works became foundational references for agronomy students and practitioners across the region.

International Engagement and Scientific Leadership

Šarić played a significant role in building international scientific networks. He was:

  • A founding member of the European Weed Research Society (EWRS) in 1975
  • A long-serving member of its scientific and educational committees
  • Active within EWRS for approximately 30 years, longer than any other founding member

He also helped establish the Yugoslav Society for Weed Research and Control in Sarajevo in 1973 and served as its president for many years.

Through these roles, he contributed to integrating Yugoslav and later Bosnian science into broader European research frameworks.

Recognition and Honors

For his contributions to science and education, Taib Šarić received numerous prestigious awards and recognitions, including:

  • Membership in the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANUBiH)
  • The Veselin Masleša Award
  • The Sixth April Award of the City of Sarajevo

His election to ANUBiH marked recognition of his status as one of the leading scientific figures in the country.

Legacy and Influence

Taib Šarić’s legacy is multifaceted:

  • Scientific: He established herbology and significantly advanced agroecology in Southeast Europe.
  • Educational: His textbooks and teaching shaped generations of agronomists and researchers.
  • Institutional: He helped build enduring academic programs and international collaborations.

Perhaps most importantly, Šarić bridged science and practice, ensuring that agricultural research translated into real-world applications in farming, environmental protection, and sustainable land use.

Death

Taib Šarić passed away on 15 June 2019 in Sarajevo at the age of 85. His death marked the loss of one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most prominent scientists, but his intellectual and institutional legacy continues to influence agricultural science in the region.

Overall Significance

Taib Šarić stands as a central figure in the development of modern agricultural sciences in Bosnia and Herzegovina. His work placed Sarajevo on the scientific map in agroecology and herbology, while his mentorship ensured that his influence would extend far beyond his own lifetime.
