Nikola Šop
Early Life
Šop was born in Jajce, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1904. He completed primary school in his hometown, attended secondary school in Banja Luka, and finished higher gymnasium in Belgrade, where he also graduated in comparative literature and Latin from the Faculty of Philology.
In 1944 he moved permanently to Zagreb, where he lived and worked until his death in 1982. For much of his life he was not widely recognized as a poet. Only in 1970 did he receive broader acknowledgment, when he was awarded the Vladimir Nazor Lifetime Achievement Award, one of Croatia’s most prestigious literary prizes.
Literary Work
Šop’s poetic voice was distinctive in the South Slavic literary space. He became known as a poet of the “modern Christian” sensibility: his works humanized God, bringing Him closer to people, and breaking with traditional dogmas that portrayed God as distant and incomprehensible. In Šop’s poetry there is no sense of fear before the divine; instead, there is warmth, intimacy, and a portrayal of God and Christ as friends, which made his work accessible and deeply appealing to readers.
His first collections include Pjesme siromašnog sina (Poems of a Poor Son, 1929) and Isus je moja sjena (Jesus is My Shadow, 1935). Among his later and most celebrated works are Od ranih do kasnih pijetlova (From Early to Late Roosters), Za kasnim stolom (At the Late Table), Kućice u svemiru (Little Houses in Space, 1957), Astralije (Astralia, 1961), and Tajanstvena prela (Mysterious Gatherings, 1943), a collection of lyrical, fairy-tale-like poetic prose.
Style and Legacy
Šop’s poetry is characterized by simple language combined with profound metaphysical and religious themes. He shifted from early intimate and humble motifs toward a cosmic vision of existence, blending Christian mysticism with meditations on the universe.
Today, Šop is considered one of the most original poets of the 20th century in Bosnian and Yugoslav literature. His work has left a lasting mark on the region’s spiritual and literary heritage, celebrated for its warmth, accessibility, and originality.
