Mihovil Vlahinić
Mihovil Vlahinić, a distinguished agronomist and academic, was born in 1926 in Ravno, Bosnia and Herzegovina. His illustrious career was marked by groundbreaking contributions to agricultural science and land reclamation.
Education and Early Career
Vlahinić completed his primary education in Ravno and continued his secondary education at classical gymnasiums in Travnik, Visoko, and Sarajevo. In 1953, he graduated from the Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb. That same year, he began working at the Institute for Water Resources in Sarajevo, focusing on agropedology and agricultural hydromelioration. In 1959, he joined Poljoprojekt, the Republic Bureau for Agricultural Studies and Design, as an independent designer.
In 1963, Vlahinić transitioned to academia, joining the Faculty of Agriculture in Sarajevo. He progressed through the ranks, becoming a full professor in 1973. He earned his PhD in agricultural sciences in 1965.
Academic Leadership
From 1975 to 1977, Vlahinić served as the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture in Sarajevo. He later chaired the Association of Biotechnical Sciences Faculties at the University of Sarajevo (1978–1980). He was an active member of the University Council and served on committees for teaching, international, and inter-university collaboration.
During the Bosnian War (1992–1995), Vlahinić worked as a consultant for the University of Georgia on an international research project (SANREM CRSP).
Scientific Contributions
Vlahinić's research focused on agricultural melioration, soil-water balance, and irrigation. Key achievements include:
- Establishing experimental fields for studying soil drainage, water erosion, and irrigation.
- Introducing innovative methods for soil hydrology, such as lysimetry for studying evapotranspiration and soil-water interactions.
- Developing drainage solutions for challenging soil types, including skeletal, sandy, clay-heavy, and peat soils.
- Collaborating with American institutions on projects evaluating crop water requirements and agrohydrology, which were highly rated by international reviewers.
His work resulted in numerous publications, research studies, and practical solutions that advanced agricultural practices in Yugoslavia and beyond.
Honors and Recognition
Vlahinić was elected a Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1987 and became a Full Member in 2002. He received numerous awards for his contributions to science and education.
Legacy
Mihovil Vlahinić passed away in Sarajevo in 2015, leaving behind a legacy of scientific excellence and dedication to advancing agricultural sciences. His work continues to influence modern practices in soil management and irrigation.
