Magdalena Živanović – The First Female Poet of Bijeljina

Magdalena Živanović (1876–1956) holds a special place in the cultural and literary history of Bijeljina as its first recorded poetess. Born into a prominent family, she was the daughter of Jovan Nikolić, a well-known merchant, but was raised by her maternal grandfather, Pero Živanović, after losing her father at a young age. Deeply influenced by the patriarchal values of her upbringing, Magdalena found her voice in poetry, writing under the pseudonym Maga Ž. (Živanović).

Her literary journey was profoundly shaped by Jovan Dučić, one of the most celebrated poets of the region, who arrived in Bijeljina in 1893 as a young teacher. Their acquaintance, formed at a Saint Sava celebration in 1894, blossomed into a deep romantic and intellectual connection. Inspired by Dučić, Magdalena began publishing her lyrical and patriotic poetry, with themes of love, longing, and national pride. Two of her most notable works include "Što tuži srce tvoje" and "Pjesma bez naslova", which were published in the literary journal "Bosanska vila".

However, the societal norms of the time stood between their love. Magdalena’s family, valuing wealth and status, opposed her marriage to the young, ambitious but financially modest Dučić. At the same time, Dučić's patriotic writings led to political persecution, forcing him to leave Bijeljina in 1895. Despite their physical separation, they continued corresponding through poetry, exchanging verses filled with yearning and unfulfilled love. Over time, the letters stopped, and their love story remained one of longing rather than union.

Magdalena never married, refusing an arranged match set up by her family. She spent the rest of her life in solitude, living in the same house where she and Dučić had once met, reading and rereading his letters. She passed away in 1956 at the age of 80, almost forgotten by the world. However, even after decades, Dučić never truly let go of her memory, often speaking of her with deep nostalgia.

Today, Magdalena Živanović is remembered not only as the first poetess of Bijeljina but also as the muse of Jovan Dučić. Her gravestone at Pučile Cemetery honors her legacy with the inscription:

"Here rests Magdalena Nikolić-Živanović, the first inspiration of the poet Jovan Dučić, and a poet herself."

Her family home still stands in the center of Bijeljina, a silent witness to a love story that was both beautiful and tragic—one that shaped the poetry of one of Bosnia’s greatest literary figures.
